The Topical Collection on Football Research

FIFA is collaborating with the International Sport Engineering Association (ISEA) to launch a special collection of peer reviewed research within the Sport Engineering Journal. In 2016 the FIFA 2.0 strategy was published, the vision to the future, this saw a seismic shift in the approach from FIFA towards technology and innovation.

“FIFA will leverage technological advances to improve the quality of the football experience – from developing players on the pitch, to communicating with fans at home, to producing the optimal showcase competitions.” Four years on and FIFA’s Technology & Innovation department is directly responsible for the implementation and standardisation of various football technologies, including Video Assistant Refereeing (VAR), Virtual Offside Line (VOL), Electronic Performance Tracking Systems (EPTS) and Goal Line Technology (GLT). These technologies in addition to the playing surfaces and footballs quality programmes have required thousands of hours of research and resources to develop and improve the standard worldwide. This research, conducted with leading universities and test institutes has, unfortunately, often remained unpublished. However, in an attempt to take football research to the next level FIFA has collaborated with the International Sports Engineering Association (ISEA) to launch a Topical Collection on Football Research - a special collection of peer reviewed research on football within the Sports Engineering journal. The two and a half year project will see football research of the highest quality published online with a final collection released before the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.  The submission portal is now open and closes on the 31st of July 2022. We invite you to submit your research articles with specific focus on the following keywords within sports engineering:
