FIFA Council and Foundation Board member Isha Johansen attended the final of the 2022 Amputee World Cup held on 9 October in Istanbul. Hosts Turkey won the tournament for the first time with a 4-1 victory over defending champions Angola at Galatasaray's Nef Stadium. “For me, it was the first time I saw amputee football at this high level of competition. It is a fascinating sport and as a spectator, you immediately forget that the players are playing with a disability and the crutches disappear,” said Johansen.

“It's about football, two teams, skill, speed, agility, coordination, and most of all emotion. I am excited to see how the sport is growing on all continents and there are now more players, teams, national leagues, and national teams in more than 60 countries. I hope and wish that together with the national football federations we will find ways to promote and further develop the sport. Amputee football is part of the global football family.” Amputee football is growing in popularity across the world and since 2002 it has been a key activity in Johansen’s home country, Sierra Leone, as it has enabled plenty of youngsters to regain their pride and self-confidence following the civil war. Established in March 2018, the FIFA Foundation has been promoting promoting social inclusion through football, including activities in the area of amputee football, as well numerous grassroots initiatives that drive social development in underprivileged communities around the world, in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
