Widely regarded as Korea Republic's greatest ever, he was one of the first players from Asia to make an impact in Europe, paving the way for the influx that has followed in subsequent decades.
While best remembered for his successes as a player, which included winning the UEFA Cup with two separate German clubs, he went into coaching too and led his beloved Taegeuk Warriors to the 1998 FIFA World Cup France™.
