Gianni Infantino and Macky Sall discuss range of football topics

  • FIFA President and Senegal head of state met in New York City

  • Among the subjects up for discussion were the FIFA World Cup™ and football development in Senegal

  • Meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly

FIFA President Gianni Infantino and President Macky Sall of Senegal have met in New York City, to discuss football development projects and the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. The two presidents, who are in New York for the 77th United Nations General Assembly, sat down to discuss the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which kicks off in Qatar on 20 November 2022. The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations champions have been drawn in Group A, alongside host nation Qatar, Ecuador, and the Netherlands – and begin their campaign on day two of the tournament, against the Netherlands.

Senegal has also positively engaged with the FIFA Forward programme – the vehicle by which FIFA invests in global football development – and Presidents Infantino and Sall discussed the past successes, including a recent initiative in which more than 300 stewards across Senegal have received health, safety and security training – allowing them to then transfer knowledge to others and improve overall safety levels for match-going fans in Senegal. Earlier in 2022, President Infantino was in Senegal to attend the official opening of the Stade de Senegal in Diamniadio – an event also attended by President Sall.
