FIFA President mourns death of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

On behalf of the international football community, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed his deep condolences following the passing of Shinzo Abe. Japan’s former Prime Minister died from injuries he sustained after being shot while making a speech during a political campaign event in the city of Nara on Friday morning. “It was with great emotion and deep sadness that I learned of the tragic passing of the former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe,” wrote President Infantino in a letter to the Japan Football Association (JFA). “Tributes are flowing from around the world to salute his memory, and we would like herewith to join them. “Recognised for his dedication, his leadership and human qualities, having contributed to Japan's stability and economic development in recent years, as well as to the prosperity of football and sport, Shinzo Abe will not be forgotten. “On behalf of the members of the international football community, I wish to extend our deepest condolences to the Japan Football Association, to the government of Japan, to the Japanese people and to Shinzo Abe’s family in these difficult times.”
