FIFA President Gianni Infantino says first edition of flagship tournament in South America will boost women’s game “in so many ways”
Tenth edition will be the second to feature 32 teams, will be played across eight Host Cities
Rio de Janeiro’s Estádio do Maracanã to host opening game on 24 June and final on 25 July as match schedule is announced
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has said the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027™ will provide women’s football with a massive boost as the showpiece tournament heads to South America for the very first time. Next year sees the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ venture into unchartered territory as eight Host Cities from Porto Alegre in the south to Fortaleza in the north-east of Brazil welcome the world. It will be the second edition since the competition’s expansion to 32 teams, and along with its unprecedented location, Mr Infantino said 2027 would build upon the impressive impetus of the transformational 2023 tournament in Australia and New Zealand.
“We can’t wait to witness the unfolding of women’s football history when the world's best players – together with coaches, fans, local communities – take centre stage in Brazil next year,” the FIFA President said in a video message played at the event that coupled the tournament’s match schedule announcement with the Preliminary Phase Draw for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Play-Off Tournament. “That is something that pleases me very much, and something that is needed to take the women’s game even further down this road we have travelled together. The 2027 tournament will certainly help us to do that in so many ways.” Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Estádio do Maracanã will stage the opening game featuring the host nation on 24 June with the last of the 64 matches also being played at the legendary venue as the 2027 champions are crowned on 25 July. This will make it the only stadium to have hosted both the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup™ finals and both gold-medal matches in the Olympic Football Tournament.
São Paulo’s Arena Itaquera will stage the most games with 10, but each Host City will provide the backdrop to six group-stage matches as well as at least one knockout round tie. This will ensure as many fans as possible across the football-mad host nation will have the chance to see the very best female footballers on the planet in action for themselves.
“I already have goosebumps at the thought of the incredible passion and colour the Brazilian fans will bring throughout the tournament as they welcome the world to eight vibrant Host Cities. Now that you’re imagining it, I am sure you have goosebumps too,” said the FIFA President, echoing the sentiment behind the tournament slogan, Go Epic! “Of course, I can’t wait for the football and the fans at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027, and I hope to see you there too. Vai ser Épico!”
