Portugal knock out hosts Korea Republic

  • Portugal beat hosts Korea Republic in front of capacity crowd

  • Xadas scores brace

  • Portugal will play the winner of Uruguay-Saudi Arabia

A display of efficiency helped Portugal beat Korea Republic 3-1 in front of a capacity crowd in Cheonan in the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea Republic 2017.

Portugal scored with their first two chances of the match when Xadas and Bruno Costa both steered in efforts with supreme accuracy.  Buoyed by an electric home crowd, Korea Republic pushed numbers forward to get back into the match, but they lacked the ruthlessness in front of goal that Portugal showed on the evening.

Xadas put the game to bed in the 69th minute when he weaved his way through Korea Republic's defence before placing a shot into the bottom corner. Substitute Lee Sangheon scored in the 81st minute to give the hosts a glimmer of hope but it proved a mere consolation.

Portugal will play the winner of Uruguay-Saudi Arabia - who face off tomorrow in Suwon - on Sunday 4 June, while Korea Republic's campaign on home soil comes to an end.
