The Kenyan Football Federation has unveiled its women's football strategy
It is being implemented with the help of FIFA’s Capacity-Building for Administrators courses
51 participants have successfully completed the first course
On 14 July 2021, the Kenyan Football Federation (FKF) unveiled its new women's football strategy, which aims to help highlight and develop the enormous potential of women's football in Kenya.
"Through this strategy, we hope to exploit, grow and develop the women’s game and guide Kenya’s vision of qualifying for the Women’s World Cup for the first time," said FKF President Nick Mwendwa.
Wednesday’s launch brought together all the stakeholders of women's football in the east African country. Doreen Nabwire, Head of Women's Football at the FKF, explained the content and the five key areas to be developed:
Grassroots and youth football
Leagues and competitions/club licenses
National teams/Performance centres
Capacity-building
Marketing and branding
"We re-introduced women's football competitions, which played a key role in ensuring Kenya’s qualification for the 2016 Africa Women's Cup of Nations and winning the 2019 CECAFA Women Championships," Mwendwa continued.
"These achievements, coupled with an increased number of our female football players scouted in some of Europe’s top leagues and the need to cement the country’s position as a women’s football powerhouse, have prompted the crucial need for a strategic approach, aimed at holistically and consistently developing the women’s game, in order to complete, sustain, and continuously grow its success both at national and grassroots level."
In order to achieve the objectives of the strategy, capacity-building courses for administrators are being held. The first courses ran from 15-17 and 19-21 July at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) in Kasarani. Fifty-one participants successfully completed these and were accordingly certified.
During the opening ceremony, FKF Vice-President Doris Petra explained the importance of the course for the implementation of the recently introduced strategy:
As a woman in football, one of my key agendas is to change my community’s mindset through my leadership role.
"To set the ball rolling on the FKF Women Football Strategy that we launched, we have organized an administrative course for FKF County women representatives to gain knowledge that will in the long run help actualise the women's football strategy," FKF Vice-President Doris Petra explained.
Thanks to these courses, the FKF’s regional women’s representatives will be provided with the necessary skills in areas including leadership, sponsorship management, strategic planning, financial planning, project management, marketing and communications and media management.
"As a woman in football, one of my key agendas is to change my community’s mindset through my leadership role, showing them that girls can play football, excel in school and also in the long run be able to take up leadership positions. I am also thankful for this course as I have been able to gain knowledge and skills that I plan to actualise in my county," said Real Lomoti, the representative for the Turkana district, of her experience.
