The FIFA Training Centre was launched in November 2021 as an innovative tool available to players and coaches across the world. With a comprehensive bank of technical football information, the online academy features insightful resources developed by the sport’s leading experts and illustrates FIFA’s goal to harness technology for the benefit of the global game. The FIFA Training Centre continues to expand its collection of practice sessions. This week's additions are made up of three elite sessions that shift the limelight from outfield players to the player between the posts.
The first new addition sees the FA and England's Head of Coaching, Tim Dittmer, treat us to a practice plan for goalkeepers that focuses on defending the space in 1v1 situations. This thorough practice ensures that keepers who participate in the session gain valuable training and insight on how to increase their chances of success during these pivotal game situations. Dittmer's second session incorporates exercises that cultivate essential skills for both outfield players and goalkeepers. Whilst the emphasis for outfield players is on finishing chances, keepers in this session receive an abundance of opportunities to develop their positioning and spatial awareness.
One of the starkest differences between the football played by many sides today and that of previous decades is highlighted in a goalkeeper's role in build-up. Now, keepers are increasingly often the focal points in their team's deep build-up, playing and receiving various types of passes from their team-mates. In this week's third session, FC Zürich's Head of Goalkeeping Youth Development, Dean Santangelo, provides the Training Centre with a session plan that targets the integral skills needed for goalkeepers to confidently play out from the back.
Look out for more from The FIFA Training Centre, with a vast range of training sessions aimed at cultivating the essential skills and qualities that players require to thrive on the pitch. The content features sessions for all levels, from grassroots to elite, and all age groups, from young children to adults.
