It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Dr Bill Garrett.
He was the Director of Duke Health FMCE and a valued member of their orthopaedic surgery staff with over 40 years of service to Duke University Medical Center and his patients. He served as the Medical Director of the US Soccer Federation and Team Physician for the US men and women’s national soccer teams. He was also a member of the US Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Society and was named Director of Research for CONCACAF by the FIFA Medical Committee.
Dr Garrett served as President of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Herodicus Society. He served on the Boards of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He was also awarded the Duke Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Master Orthopaedist Award.
He worked with FIFA on many projects over the years and contributed a great deal to the international sports medicine community, especially football medicine.
As Michel D’Hooghe, Chairman of the FIFA Medical Committee, said: “We sadly lose a great friend, who made an important contribution to the global development of sports medicine.”
