More than 5,900 international transfers were completed in men’s professional football during the January 2026 transfer window. This is an increase of just over 3% compared to the same period in 2025 and represents the highest number of transfers ever recorded during a January window.

Spending on transfer fees reached more than USD 1.9 billion during the January 2026 window, a decrease of about 18% compared to January 2025, but still more than 20% above the previous record set in January 2023.

For instance, select the metric “Transfer fees spent (USD)” and the two associations Italy and France to see that, while they had similar spending in January 2025, Italian clubs far outspent their French counterparts in January 2026.

Brazil was the Member Association with the highest number of incoming transfers during the January 2026 transfer window. The largest share of these transfers came from clubs in Portugal, followed by Japan, Uruguay, Colombia and Malta.

Clubs agreed to include a transfer fee in roughly 17% of all transfers completed during the January 2026 window, with the average transfer fee lying in the range of USD 1.9 million. These figures vary considerably across the globe: the highest share of incoming transfers with fees was completed by clubs in UEFA with more than 25%, which also involved the highest average transfer fees.

The average age of players who transferred during the January 2026 transfer window was 24.9 years. Among the associations with at least ten incoming transfers, players who joined a new club in Nigeria were, on average, the youngest (21.7 years), whereas those who joined a new club in Indonesia were the oldest, with an average age of 29.4 years.

Over 59% of transfers during the January 2026 transfer window involved players who were out of contract. Transfers related to loans represented around 24% of all transfers, and the remaining 17% were permanent transfers.
