The FIFA Women's World Cup Stadium in Augsburg was completely rebuilt exclusively for football between 2007 and 2009, celebrating its official opening on 26 July 2009. The redevelopment was planned in two phases so that a second tier can be added in the future if required. Its current capacity is 24,605.
The stadium sold out for the very first time for the women's international match between Germany and the USA on 29 October 2009. It was the second-largest crowd ever at a women's match in Germany. The stadium's regular tenants are local club FC Augsburg, who returned to the 2. Bundesliga following a 23-year hiatus in 2006.
The arena hosted six FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup 2010 group matches, as well as the quarter-final between the USA and Nigeria. Augsburg will be the venue for three group games and a quarter-final during the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011.
