Brazil and Sweden played out a 1-1 draw at the PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby, a result which saw the South Americans progress to the quarter-finals at the expense of the Swedes. Gabi Nunes levelled after Stina Blackstenius had opened the scoring, with the Brazilians looking the more threatening for the remainder of the game but unable to grab the three points.
After Blackstenius had been a thorn in the side of the Brazilians early in the game, with flashes of her attacking promise putting A Seleção** on the back foot, she struck with less than 15 minutes on the clock. An inswinging Filippa Angeldal corner from the Swedish left was nodded on by Tove Almqvist and Blackstenius reacted quickest to head home.
Brazil drew level after a couple of errors in the Swedish defence. Goalkeeper Emma Holmgren conceded a cheap corner, from which Brena and Duda worked it short. The former then whipped in a devilish delivery which Gabi Nunes headed home, despite Holmgren's vain attempt to keep it out.
After the break, despite it being the Swedes that needed the three points to progress, it was Dorival Bueno's side who were firmly in control. They dominated possession, and created a number of opportunities, with a mixture of lacklustre finishing, good defending and an improved second-half performance by Holmgren combining to keep the South Americans out.
In the end, the game petered out to a draw, which saw the Brazilians progress to the knockouts in second place in Group A behind Korea DPR, who achieved maximum points with their impressive victory over the hosts.
