The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Uruguay 2018 now has its official mascot, a happy, smiling capybara called Capi™.

Capi was unveiled to the world at the legendary Estadio Centenario in Montevideo on Thursday 7 June. The stadium was looking its very best as it hosted the Uruguayan national team’s final match before their departure for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™.

Stepping out on to the pitch before the game, which saw La Celeste take on Uzbekistan, Capi earned an ovation from the crowd as she posed for photos with players from both the men’s senior team and the Uruguay U-17 women’s side, who are currently preparing for the world finals in their age group.

Capi played a full part in the evening’s festivities, both at half-time and at the end of the game, smilingly posing for countless photos with the fans, who quickly accepted her as one of their own.

Her presentation marks another milestone in the countdown to the sixth U-17 Women’s World Cup, to be held in the cities of Montevideo, Colonia de Sacramento and Maldonado between 13 November and 1 December this year.

Meet Capi! Capi is a 17-year-old footballer who is sociable, inquisitive and committed to her team, which she captains.

An outgoing character, she loves to be part of a group, especially her football team, where she can show all her skills and what a great competitor she is.

With her eye-catching appearance and warm, approachable nature, she is the ideal ambassador for the World Cup.

Her character is a reflection of the values that FIFA is looking to promote among the young women taking part in the tournament, and among the fans.

Why Capi? Capi is inspired by the capybara, the world’s largest rodent. A play on words between “capybara” and “capitana” (the Spanish for “captain”), her name perfectly encapsulates her character. As a skipper, she sets an example for her players to follow. Charismatic, unfailingly optimistic and a born leader, she puts her team before herself.

What they said about Capi “We are excited to introduce Capi, our new mascot for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Uruguay 2018. Strong and joyful, Capi is an ambassador for young football lovers and she is looking forward to meeting them throughout the year at several venues In Uruguay, including schools. She symbolises hope and positivity and enhances the beauty of football. She is a leader and an inspiration, and we are convinced that she will keep inspiring the youngest generations in the future and encourage them to play football.” FIFA’s Chief Commercial Officer Philippe Le Floc’h

“It is very exciting to see Capi, the tournament’s official mascot, unveiled in a setting like this, with the support of the national team that will represent us in Russia. If we are going to raise the profile of women’s football and ensure women have a place in this sport, then we must have the support of everyone, especially the football family. That’s why the backing of the men’s senior team is so crucial.” Local Organising Committee President Rafael Fernandez
