Four-star Germany stun holders Korea DPR

Germany made a bright start to their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Uruguay 2018 campaign with a convincing 4-1 victory over reigning champions Korea DPR in Colonia Del Sacramento on Wednesday.

It was the Germans that showed a cutting edge during the first half at the Estadio Alberto Suppici, as they took a two-goal lead into the half-time break.

Charlotte Blumel got on the scoresheet with a well taken free-kick just before the quarter-hour mark. Gia Corley doubled Germany’s advantage on 35 minutes after making the most of a fine cross from Shekiera Martinez.

The Asian champions replied just past the midway point of the second half through Yun Ji-Hwa, but that prompted Corley to immediately hit back with her second goal of the game a minute later.

Germany made sure they took all three points from this Group C encounter when substitute Sophie Weidauer struck home a fine fourth goal in the late stages.
