Germany displayed their efficiency in front of goal in a 4-0 victory over USA to top Group C at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Uruguay 2018 on Wednesday.

Shekiera Martinez scored a brace, with both goals coming from counter-attacks, while Vanessa Fudalla curled in a free-kick in the fourth minute. Despite having more goal attempts, USA were unable to convert any of their chances - hitting the woodwork on three occasions - while Germany capitalised on theirs.

The European runners-up took the lead in the fourth minute at the Estadio Charrua in Montevideo after Michela Agresti fouled Ivana Fuso right outside the USA penalty area. Fudalla curled in the resulting free-kick over the North American side's wall.

USA then bombarded Germany's goal with a series of significant chances, but Germany goalkeeper Wiebke Willebrandt stood up to every shot brilliantly, keeping the Stars and Stripes off the board.

Martinez then doubled the Germans' lead, capitalising on USA's high backline, and finished with composure, passing the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Angelina Anderson saved Fuso's penalty kick in the 65th minute, after Talia Dellaperuta dragged Fudalla down, but the German captain made amends immediately afterwards. Fuso broke free on a counter-attack and had the vision to find team-mate Martinez in a better position before she finished from close range for her second of the match.

Dellaperuta would later be sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

Laura Donhauser then added the cherry on top for Germany, as she rounded USA goalkeeper Anderson to finish off another counter-attack and put the result beyond doubt.

Germany now progress to a second consecutive U-17 Women's World Cup quarter-final and will play Group D runners-up Canada in Montevideo on 25 November for a spot in the semi-finals.

USA, meanwhile, fail to progress past the group stage for the second consecutive U-17 Women's World Cup.
