10 days to go: Safe hands
The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is drawing ever nearer – with just 10 days to go! Between now and the start of the World Cup, we will take a closer look at a different statistic from the history of the tournament each day.
10 - Fabian Barthez and Peter Shilton did more than just string together saves at the FIFA World Cup™. The France goalkeeper and his England counterpart share a tournament record that puts them at the top of their profession, having both kept ten clean sheets in world finals matches.
Barthez began his sequence on home soil at France 1998, which ended with him keeping Brazil at bay in his side’s 3-0 win in the Final. The French custodian’s love affair with the World Cup ended with another Final appearance at Germany 2006, his 17th game in the competition, a national record.
Shilton kept his tenth World Cup clean sheet 16 years earlier, in a 1-0 win for England against Egypt at Italy 1990, which was also his third successive world finals appearance. His performance is made all the more impressive by the fact that clean sheets were once rarer than they are now, with twice as many being registered at the last five world finals than at the first five. Shilton also remains his country’s most capped player of all time with 125 appearances to his name.
