7 days to go: Record hat-trick for Hungary's Kiss
The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is drawing ever nearer – with just 7 days to go! Between now and the start of the World Cup, we will take a closer look at a different statistic from the history of the tournament each day.
7 – While Hungary have not been represented at a FIFA World Cup™ for more than 30 years now, their name appears several times in the tournament’s history books, whether in relation to Ferenc Puskas and the Mighty Magyars in 1954 or their record-breaking match against El Salvador in 1982.
Although Hungary exited the competition after the group stages in Spain, their 10-1 victory over the Central Americans remains the biggest win in World Cup history. Laszlo Kiss contributed three goals that day – in just seven minutes. The striker wasted no time finding the target after coming on as a substitute for Andras Torocsik in the 56th minute, scoring in the 69th, 72nd and 76th minutes.
Kiss’s remarkable feat is the fastest hat-trick ever netted at the World Cup finals, while he is also the only substitute in the history of the competition to score three goals in a single match.
