The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is drawing ever nearer – 34 days to go! Between now and the start of the World Cup, we will take a closer look at a different statistic from the history of the tournament each day.
34 - Every now and again, a goal is scored that becomes the stuff of legend – and Manuel Negrete’s remarkable volley for Mexico in their 1986 FIFA World Cup™ Round of 16 match against Bulgaria is one such strike. After warding off a defender’s challenge, the then 27-year-old played a one-two with a team-mate before unleashing a scissor kick into the bottom right-hand corner in the 34th minute.
His goal – the opener for Mexico in a 2-0 win in front of 114,580 fans at the Estadio Azteca – was recently voted the best FIFA World Cup™ goal of all time on the official FIFA World Cup Facebook page.
