Dejan Lovren (5.0m) Croatia Only England and Spain (3 goals) conceded less than Croatia (4 in 10 matches) in European qualifying for Russia 2018. The 28-year-old Liverpool man is an automatic starter and a threat from set-pieces, as he showed with a knock-down assist from Sadio Mane in the recent UEFA Champions League final. Aleksandr Samedov (4.5m) Russia The Spartak Moscow man is a steal – for position and price. The 33-year-old started Russia’s last four games, alternating between acting as a very attacking right-wingback and an out-an-out winger. Samedov also netted a sumptuous dink from a tight angle in a 1-1 draw with Turkey in their final warm-up friendly, while he was also on target against Mexico at last year’s FIFA Confederations Cup. Russia may not carry a sterling defensive run into the competition, but they have Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Uruguay to play in what is, judging by the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking at least, one of the tournament's weaker groups.

Luis Advincula (4.5m) Peru The Lobos man covered 68.5 metres in a mind-blowing 6.82 seconds (36.15km/h) this year to reportedly break Gareth Bale’s record and become the fastest top-flight footballer on the planet. Peru capitalise upon Advincula’s supersonic speed by playing him in an adventurous right-wingback position. Furthermore, Peru drew 0-0 away to a Lionel Messi-led Argentina in a crucial Russia 2018 qualifier in October, went 180 minutes without conceding in their intercontinental playoff with New Zealand, and have kept clean sheets in six of their last seven matches.

Ahmed Hegazi (4.5m) Egypt The broad-shouldered, 6ft 4ins centre-back was a rock as the Pharaohs kept four consecutive clean sheets en route to the CAF Africa Nations Cup final in 2017. Hegazi also helped Hector Cup’s team cruise to World Cup qualification and kept Colombia predator Radamel Falcao silent in a goalless draw last week. The 27-year-old West Bromwich Albion man is a threat from set-pieces, having scored twice in the 2017/18 Premier League, and faces Uruguay, Russia and Saudi Arabia in Group A.
