Brazil right-back Dani Alves has been ruled out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ after he suffered a knee injury while playing for his club Paris Saint-Germain.

Alves sustained the injury in the 80th minute during PSG's Coupe de France victory over Les Herbiers.

The Brazilian football federation (Confederacao Brasileira de Futebol) announced the news on their official website with the following statement: "Last Thursday [10 May], Brazilian national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar and coordinator Edu Gaspar arrived in Paris for an in-depth follow-up of the medical situation which occurred in the Coupe de France final with Paris Saint-Germain right-back, Daniel Alves.

"As it has been since the beginning of the work, the technical committee has created an important relationship with the teams from Brazil and abroad, which allows for technical, physical and clinical follow-ups [...] as well as participation in decision-making.

"Following this line of work together, the patient underwent a detailed examination and confirmed the initial diagnosis of an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which required surgical treatment.

"Having exhausted all the alternatives of recovery within the term, the call up of Daniel Alves was found impossible for the period of preparation, friendlies and, consequently, for the World Cup.

"The technical team of the Brazilian national team feels for the event and wishes Daniel Alves a prompt recovery so that his technique, commitment and leadership are back at the service of the national team as soon as possible."
