5 days to go: Salenko’s goalscoring exploits
The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is drawing ever nearer – with just 5 days to go! Between now and the start of the World Cup, we will take a closer look at a different statistic from the history of the tournament each day.
5 - Russia striker Oleg Salenko's five goals against Cameroon is a record that still stands today.
Overall, the 1994 FIFA World Cup USA™ was one to forget for the Russian national team, who lost their first two games against Brazil 2-0 and Sweden 3-1, leaving them on the verge of exiting at the group stage. However, in their final fixture the Sbornaya turned it around and thrashed Cameroon 6-1.
Five of the six goals that day were scored by Salenko. Adding to his strike against Sweden, this was enough for the Russian to share the adidas Golden Boot award at the tournament with Bulgaria’s Hristo Stoichkov.
Will anyone break Salenko’s record in his homeland?
