The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is getting closer – 38 days to go! Between now and the start of the World Cup, we will take a closer look at a different statistic from the history of the tournament each day.

38 The FIFA World Cup™ is one of the largest sporting events in the world, with every football-loving nation dreaming of participating in the tournament and winning the much-coveted Trophy, the biggest prize in football. So far, only nine countries have managed to hoist it aloft.

The Trophy is not the only prize awarded to the winners, however. The champions collect a cool $38 million USD in prize money, with $28 million going to the runners-up. In total, $400 million will be distributed among the teams taking part at Russia 2018, well up on the $20 million handed out at Spain 1982, a reflection of the growing importance of this showpiece event on the global sporting calendar.
