23 days to go: Squads set to assemble

The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is drawing ever nearer – with just 23 days to go! Between now and the start of the World Cup, we will take a closer look at a different statistic from the history of the tournament each day.

23 - Each country participating at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ can select a maximum of 23 players to take to the tournament. While many teams have already announced a provisional squad in recent weeks, the final 23-man lists (including three goalkeepers) will be published by FIFA on 4 June.

Each nation must submit its starting line-up to the referee at least 85 minutes before kick-off. This team sheet includes all 23 players – the starting 11 and 12 substitutes. The numbers on the back of the players’ shirts must match those listed on the team sheet from 1 to 23, while the goalkeepers and captain must also be indicated accordingly. Three of the players in each squad must be goalkeepers, with one given the No1 shirt.
