Late goals in each half helped Uruguay outlast Honduras 2-0 at Lublin Stadium on Monday during Group C action of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Poland 2019. The result saw La Celeste secure their place in the knockout stage.
Uruguay's first was the product of a well-worked set piece in the 41st minute. Brian Rodriguez's delivery from more than 40 yards out reached the head of Sebastian Caceres on the right-hand side of the penalty area. The 19-year-old defender flicked the ball tantalisingly across the face of goal, teeing up Acevedo's right-footed blast into the back of the net.
Coming off a thorough defeat at the hands of New Zealand, Honduras coach Carlos Tabora made five changes to his starting XI, and the improvement was immediately evident. Los Catrachos were stingy in defence and at times overwhelmed Uruguay with their attacking movement up the left flank.
But Uruguay struck again a minute into second-half stoppage time. Nicolas Schiappacasse barrelled into position to finish off an elegant counterattack, ensuring his side a spot in the last 16.
