Korea Republic and the Netherlands became the first two quarter-finalists at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Brazil 2019™ on Tuesday.

The Taeguk Warriors squeezed through 1-0 in a tight contest with Angola, who had been the surprise package of the tournament thus far. Choi Minseo scored the only goal of the game after 33 minutes, sending Korea Republic into the last eight of the tournament for the third time, and the first since 2009. If they need inspiration then they should look no further than their own U-20 squad, who created quite an upset a earlier this year when they made it to the final of the FIFA U-20 World Cup™ in Poland for the first time in their history, where they came up just short against Ukraine.

The second knock-out match of the evening featured more action from the off, with no fewer than three goals in the opening quarter of an hour at the Estadio Olimpico in Goiania. Two of them were courtesy of Sontje Hansen, who twice gave the European champions the lead (4’, 15’) with Olakunle Olusegun (12’) briefly pulling Nigeria level in between. The Oranje’s No7 completed his hat-trick ten minutes before the end to make the final score 3-1.

Korea Republic will now meet the winners of the match between Japan and Mexico in the quarter-finals on Sunday 10 November (20:00 local time), while the Netherlands will be in action a little earlier that day (16:30 local time), against either South American champions Argentina or Group F winners Paraguay.

Super sub proves himself Jeong Sangbin was the top scorer for Korea Republic in the Asian championships, with all three of his strikes coming as a substitute. He also came off the bench in Brazil in the three group matches, scoring a consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat to France. Coach Kim Jung Soo decided to play him from the off against Angola, and the No11 made a valid case for a spot in the starting line-up. He had a large role in creating the lone goal, forcing Angola goalkeeper Giovani into a save that paved the way for Minseo to follow up on the rebound.

Hansen giving the Dutch courage With two goals against USA (in a 4-0 win) and now a hat-trick against the record U-17 winners in Nigeria, Sontje Hansen is becoming a bona fide star goalscorer for the Dutch in Brazil. In the race for the adidas Golden Boot, he has has powered into the lead with five goals and one assist.

Rough day for African sides Three African teams made it through to the Round of 16 here at Brazil 2019, with only Cameroon failing to make it out of their group. The first day of knock-out competition saw Angola and Nigeria both crash out, however. One African nation is still in the running, with Senegal facing Spain on Wednesday.
