Romania and France earn final two Olympic places from Europe

  • Romania and France advanced to the U-21 European Championship semi-finals

  • The two countries also secured Tokyo 2020 spots

  • They join Spain and Germany as Europe's Olympic representatives

Romania and France qualified for the Men's Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020 on Monday by advancing to the semi-finals of the UEFA Under-21 European Championship. The two sides battled to a scoreless draw in their final Group C match in Cesena.

Europe's Olympic quartet is now fully decided, with Spain and Germany reaching the semi-finals of the European Championship earlier this week.

Romania are bound for their first Olympics since 1964. France have not reached the stage since 1996, though they did win gold in 1984.

The Tricolorii and Les Bleuets both won their previous two encounters in the group phase of the European Championship, tallying victories against England and Croatia. Romania finished first in Group C with a superior goal differential to France, who advanced as the top second-placed side.

European holders Germany will take on Romania in the first semi-final while Spain will meet France in the second, with both matches taking place on Thursday 27 June.
