Germany clinch Olympic berth

  • Germany will compete at Tokyo 2020 as UEFA EURO U-21 semi-finalists

  • Die Mannschaft won silver at Rio 2016

  • Two more Olympic places are up for grabs in Europe

Germany became the second European team to cement their place at the Men's Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020 on Sunday, joining Spain by reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship Italy 2019.

Die Mannschaft finished the group phase in Italy atop Group B, registering wins over Denmark (3-1) and Serbia (6-1) before a 1-1 draw with Austria sealed their third consecutive trip to the European semi-finals and second straight Olympic appearance.

Silver medalists at the Men's Olympic Football Tournament Rio 2016, Germany fell on penalties to the hosts in a memorable final after shutting out Portugal and Nigeria in the knockout stages.

Germany are also reigning champions of Europe at this level. They edged England in a semi-final shoot-out two years ago in Poland, then defeated Spain at the final for their second continental crown.

Two Olympic spots remain for men's European sides. France and Romania will battle for first in Group C on Monday and the best second-placed side will join the three group winners both in the Italy 2019 semi-finals and at Tokyo 2020.
