Brazil hit experimental Aussies for four

  • Australia conclude Russia 2017 build-up with 4-0 loss against Brazil

  • Socceroos made eight changes to their side from last week’s World Cup qualifier

  • Diego Souza scored twice, including a goal after just 12 seconds

Australia suffered a morale blow on the eve of the FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017 after suffering a 4-0 home defeat against Brazil in Melbourne.

In their final match prior to arriving in Russia on Thursday, Australia lined-up with eight players rested from the side which defeated Saudi Arabia in a 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ qualifier last Thursday.

Australia made the worst possible start as Diego Souza took advantage of a defensive error to slot home after just 12 seconds.

Thiago Silva and Taison extended the advantage midway through the second half, before Souza rubbed salt into the wounds with his second deep into injury time.

Australia coach Ange Postecoglou handed debuts to defender Dylan McGowan and midfielder Ajdin Hrustic.

Australia will open their first Confederations Cup campaign for 12 years with an outing against Germany on Monday in Sochi, before group matches against Cameroon (22 June) in Saint Petersburg and Chile (25 June) in Moscow.
