Russia edged Senegal 8-7 in an entertaining and even contest between two continental champions in Group C.
There was never much of a gap between the sides but Russia held a slight edge, establishing two-goal leads on two occasions. However, Senegal climbed their way back into the game and even moved in front twice in the third period of a game that had as many lead changes as some basketball games.
A highlight was a quickfire bicycle kick brace by Fedor Zemskov late on and ultimately Russia did just enough to secure three crucial points.
