Stadium: "Los Pynandi" World Cup Stadium
Asuncion is the capital of Paraguay and its most populous city, with around 523,000 inhabitants.
Its metropolitan area, known as Gran Asuncion, is home to 3,000,000 people, nearly half the country’s entire population and making it one of South America’s 20 largest conurbations.
Founded on 15 August 1537, it is also one of the continent’s oldest cities.
Known as the 'Green Capital of Ibero-America' because of the wide variety of vegetation adorning its streets, gardens and the famous Nu Guazu Park, Asuncion is the country’s economic, cultural, diplomatic, social, trade-union and industrial centre.
It is also known as the “Mother of Cities”, as a number of expeditions set off from there during the Spanish colonisation of South America to found other cities.
It is also one of the cheapest capital cities in the world and is ranked sixth on the list of Latin America’s most affordable cities.
Football in Asuncion
Sport in general and football in particular are very popular in Asuncion. The city is home to several clubs with long-established presences in the country’s top flight, among them Olimpia and Cerro Porteno, the most popular teams in Paraguay.
The city’s main stadium is the Estadio Defensores del Chaco, which has long been the home of the national team.
The stadium that will host the 2019 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup will stand on the site that houses the Paraguayan Olympic Committee’s headquarters, where Asuncion meets the adjoining city of Luque.
