The Best FIFA Women's Player
Since FIFA began honouring the world’s top female player in 2001, the likes of Mia Hamm, Marta and several other all-time greats have taken centre stage. But 2020 provided a notable first as Lucy Bronze became the first-ever defender to collect women’s football’s most prestigious individual award.
The England star is also the first full-back of either gender to be crowned The Best. But if that achievement seems out of the ordinary, it should be acknowledged that Bronze is no ordinary full-back. Strength, skill, athleticism and intelligence have long established her as one of the world’s foremost players, and a formidable force in all areas of the pitch.
Now, after finishing third in last year’s voting behind Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan – and going on to enjoy a trophy-laden year at club level – this outstanding defender has earned a special place in history.
