Cristiano Ronaldo put on yet another masterful UEFA Champions League performance on Tuesday night, netting his record-tying eighth hat-trick in the competition to propel Juventus to a 3-0 triumph over Atletico Madrid in Turin. The Bianconeri advanced to the quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate.

Juventus started brightly in front of their home fans, straining _Atleti’_s backline. The high-energy approach almost paid off in the fourth minute, when Mario Mandzukic’s flicked header to the near post nearly connected with Ronaldo’s boot. Goalkeeper Jan Oblak parried the ball directly into Giorgio Chillieni’s path, whose quick finish appeared to put the hosts ahead. But Ronaldo was ruled to have fouled Oblak in his sliding challenge, and the goal was waived off.

Ronaldo’s power in the penalty area at last proved too much for the visitors in the 27th minute. The Portuguese forward leaped over Juanfran to pound home Federico Bernardeschi’s cross toward the far post, giving Juventus a 1-0 lead they would see into half-time.

Juventus levelled the tie at 2-2 less than four minutes into the second half, courtesy of another precise Ronaldo header. He popped up between Atleti’s central defence and beat an outstretched Oblak, who was able to paw the ball away but not before it crossed the goalline.

The strike that would see Juventus through to the Champions League quarter-finals came in the 86th minute, after Bernardeschi earned a penalty kick by being pushed to the ground near the top of the box. Ronaldo sent Oblak the wrong way, completing his hat-trick to the delight of a frenzied crowd at Juventus Stadium. Only Lionel Messi has as many hat-tricks in the Champions League.

On the heels of a tightly-contested first leg in Gelsenkirchen, Manchester City left no doubt at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night, running away from Schalke 7-0 in the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 match-up. City advanced to the quarter-finals via an aggregate score of 10-2.

The first half was scoreless until the 35th minute, when Sergio Aguero exhibited some guile from the penalty spot, registering the opening goal with a Panenka finish.

Aguero made good on a stylish backheel pass from Raheem Sterling three minutes later, scoring at the near post to double his side’s advantage.

Leroy Sane put another past his former club, sneaking behind the defence and latching onto a through ball in the 42nd minute to make it 3-0.

Second-half goals from Sterling (56th minute), Bernardo Silva (71st), Phil Foden (78th) and Gabriel Jesus (84th) were exclamation points on a dominant performance in Manchester.
