Roma says 'arrivederci' to its favourite son

  • Francesco Totti made his 786th and final appearance for Roma against Genoa

  • Is the club's record goalscorer and appearance-maker

  • Won one Serie A title in 24 years with the Giallorossi

It was a fitting finale to a remarkable Roma career. Francesco Totti arrived on the pitch in the 54th minute of Roma's final Italian Serie A fixture of the 2016/17 season to a rapturous applause at the Stadio Olimpico for his 786th, and final, game for the Giallorossi. The score was 1-1 when Totti arrived and, despite not getting on the scoresheet himself, he played a part in securing a 3-2 win for the side he joined almost three decades ago, ensuring automatic qualification for next season's UEFA Champions League group stages.

FIFA.com takes a closer look at ten numbers that define the iconic No10's remarkable career with Roma, the FIFA World Cup™ winner's hometown club.

1

Serie A title was the sole league championship that Totti claimed during his illustrious career. The 2000-01 league victory was Roma's third overall, and their first Scudetto since 1983. Roma's legendary No10 often turned down moves to clubs who would have provided him with a fuller trophy cabinet, once notably rejecting Real Madrid's overtures, due to his loyalty to his hometown team. "I might have had the chance to win much more with other teams but I am proud of what I have done with this Roma jersey," Totti once remarked.

back-to-back Coppa Italia victories were sealed in 2007 and 2008, both against Internazionale, and both at the Stadio Olimpico. Totti scored in the first leg of the 2007 finale. Along with his sole Serie A title, the two cups were the only major silverware he lifted with Roma.

10

was the number he donned for much of his Roma career, and he wore it with distinction for close to two decades, having been handed the fabled jersey on a full-time basis in August 1997.

11

years old is the age of Mattia Almaviva, who Totti handed his captain's armband to after his final appearance for the Giallorossi. Almaviva is the youngest captain in Roma's academy and was born in 2006: the year Totti lifted the World Cup.

times that Totti finished as a runner-up in major competitions for Roma. The unlucky number is split between eight Serie A seasons that Roma finished second and five Coppa Italia finals in which his side were defeated.

19

years as Roma's captain make him one of the longest-serving captains in world football. He has named skipper October 1998, and Totti remains Serie A's youngest ever club captain - aged 22 years, 1 month and 4 days.

26

goals in the 2006/07 season saw Totti claim the European Golden Boot, the only time he topped the scoring charts in Serie A.

58

caps for Italy were won by Totti, who made his debut in October 1998 against Switzerland. One of those appearances came in the 2006 World Cup Final, in which Gli Azzurri emerged victorious over France.

307

goals for his club, in 786 appearances, make him the all-time record goalscorer for Roma. His first came against Foggia on 4 September 1994, and his final strike for I Giallorossi was a stoppage time winner in the Coppa Italia quarter-final against AC Cesena, on 1 February 2017 - over two decades after opening his account. His 250 strikes in Serie A make him the highest goalscorer for a single club in the league's history.

8827

days elapsed between Totti's debut for Roma up until his final match for the club. He first stepped onto the pitch in what seemed a quite unremarkable 2-0 away victory at Brescia on 28 March 1993, as a fresh-faced teenager. However, those three minutes on the pitch would go down in the annals of Roma's history, the first step on the journey for their all-time record goalscorer and appearance maker.
