It was a day full of milestones for Qatar as they booked their first-ever ticket to an AFC Asian Cup final. Goals from Boualem Khoukhi, tournament leading scorer Almoez Ali, Hasan Al Haydos and Hamid Ismaeil saw Felix Sanchez’s side set up a mouthwatering final against Japan on Friday.
Qatar’s first goal was scored by way of an efficient counter attack, however, UAE goalkeeper Khalid Eisa Bilal will not be wanting to touch the game tape any time soon as he let Khoukhi’s rather routine shot on target slip under him. The next goal was much more impressive, however, as Ali finished off a neat team move by curling an unstoppable shot in off the post. His goal saw him equal IR Iran’s Ali Daei’s single-tournament record tally of eight.
UAE asked a couple of questions of Qatar keeper Saad Al Sheeb in the second half, but he was up to any challenge they threw his way. Qatar talisman Hasan Al Haydos then put the result beyond doubt with a deft chipped finish over Bilal, while Ismaeil applied the icing on the cake with a stoppage-time goal.
It was the first time Qatar had beaten the hosts of an Asian Cup in their fourth attempt, while it was also the first time Qatar had kept a clean sheet against UAE in tournament history. Notably Qatar have yet to concede a goal at UAE 2019, which sets a new record for the longest run without conceding in the competition’s history.
The result sets up an intriguing final as both Qatar and Japan have won all of their matches at UAE 2019.
