Leicester City's incredible season
If Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal side that went through the 2003/04 season unbeaten were known as the Invincibles, then Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City team must surely be known as the Impossibles.
Bookmakers in England would have given you odds of 5000/1 on Leicester winning the league at the start of the season – the same odds as Elvis Presley being found alive and conclusive proof of the existence of the Loch Ness Monster.
Last season, Leicester finished just four places and six points above the relegation zone. They parted company with manager Nigel Pearson who had pulled off the escape and appointed Claudio Ranieri, who had been sacked by Greece following a home defeat against the Faroe Islands.
After the ending of his international tenure and at the age of 63, some pundits and fans thought that Ranieri was too old for the role and expected them to struggle once again, but his formula of rest and rewarding the players with pizza and champagne after victories has brought fortune to the Foxes.
In being crowned champions, Leicester City have created history. The club have never finished atop the top-flight table and have become only the sixth name on the English Premier League Trophy since it was first lifted by Manchester United’s Bryan Robson 23 years ago.
After drawing Manchester United 1-1 on Sunday, combined with Chelsea battling back to hold Tottenham Hotspur to a 2-2 draw on Monday, the league championship was sealed. The above photo gallery tells the story of their season, one which defied all odds – especially the ones created by the bookmakers.
