Korea Republic top Group C after Kwon brilliance

Korea Republic advanced to the Men's Olympic Football Tournament Rio 2016 quarter-finals after defeating Mexico 1-0 at the Mane Garrincha Stadium in Brasilia thanks to a superb individual goal from midfielder Kwon Changhoon.

As results stood at half-time with Germany leading Fiji 6-0 in Belo Horizonte, Korea Republic knew they would advance to the quarter-finals with a draw, while Mexico would have to win. Mexico created the majority of the goalscoring opportunities but Kwon Changhoon proved that one moment of brilliance can change any football match. His goal was the difference on the day, leading the London 2012 bronze medallists to finish top of Group C at Rio 2016.

Mexico created more goalscoring opportunities throughout the whole of the contest, with Erick Torres and Erick Gutierrez combining well on multiple occasions, but the Korea Republic defence was up to the task and did enough to keep them at bay.

Kwon's goal came in the 77th minute when he wriggled his way past two Mexico defenders just outside the penalty area before unleashing a fiercely hit shot with his left foot into the near top corner, leaving Mexico goalkeeper and captain Alfredo Talavera with no chance.

The Taeguk Warriors managed to hold on to their 1-0 advantage to finish first in Group C on seven points, while Mexico were eliminated from Rio 2016 following Germany's 10-0 rout of Fiji.

Korea Republic will face Honduras in the quarter-finals in Belo Horizonte on Saturday, while Germany will meet Portugal in Brasilia.
