Jeju World Cup Stadium

The Jeju World Cup Stadium was built ahead of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™ as a football-specific venue. Both the area’s unique geography and its culture informed the stadium design, with the pitch laid 14 metres below ground level to reduce the effects of the prevailing winds, and the roof covering taking the form of traditional Jeju fishing boats. The stadium had an original capacity of 42,000 but was reduced to 29,346 after the World Cup, when sections of seating were taken out of the East Stand. Today, it is home to K-League stalwarts Jeju United FC.
