The Netherlands in UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 semis after win over Sweden
Martens and Miedema with the goals for the tournament hosts
Germany versus Denmark postponed; re-scheduled for Sunday 30 July
Goals by Lieke Martens and Vivianne Miedema earned the Netherlands a 2-0 victory over Sweden in the opening quarter-final match at the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 on Saturday.
In a match that saw chances at both ends, it was the tournament hosts that took the lead when Martens struck home a free-kick shortly after the half-hour mark at the Stadion De Vijverberg in Doetinchem.
The Dutch ensured of their place in Thursday’s semi-final in Enschede when Miedema tapped home Shanice van de Sanden’s low cross on the counter-attack on 64 minutes.
"It was a great match and a huge achievement to beat a team like Sweden,” said Netherlands coach Sarina Wiegman. “We were strong, we played as a team. We scored twice and kept a clean sheet."
Saturday’s other quarter-final between Germany and Denmark will be played on Sunday after adverse weather conditions waterlogged the pitch at the Sparta Stadion in Rotterdam on Saturday evening.
