Gnabry: You can always up your game

Perhaps the best phrase to sum up Serge Gnabry's first foray into the Men's Olympic Football Tournament at Rio 2016 for Germany is: he came, he saw, he scored.

The versatile forward, who plays his club football for Arsenal in the English Premier League, came off the bench to replace Leon Goretzka in the 28th minute of Germany's eventual 2-2 draw with Mexico and was soon wreaking havoc down the left flank.

Despite his efforts, reigning champions Mexico struck first in an entertaining encounter, with Oribe Peralta – who scored both goals in El Tri's 2-1 victory against Brazil in the final at London 2012 – putting his side ahead in the 52nd minute.

Inspired by Gnabry, Germany responded quickly. Six minutes later, the 21-year-old collected a fine through-ball from Niklas Sule inside the box and placed a composed strike to the right of the onrushing Mexico keeper Alfredo Talavera.

"I'm pleased to have helped the team with my goal," Gnabry told FIFA.comafter the game. "Of course, I can still play a lot better, but I hope I'll be able to show that in the next game. You can always up your game."

28-year wait Much-fancied Germany may have been made to wait for their first victory at a Men's Olympic Football Tournament since their last appearance in 1988, but Gnabry was nonetheless pleased with his side's start to Rio 2016.

"We didn't have a very long time to prepare for the tournament," said Gnabry. "This was a tough game. Mexico played very well and put pressure on our defence by playing a lot of long balls. All in all, it was a pretty fair result."

Next up on Sunday, Germany face a Korea Republic side that began their tournament with a resounding 8-0 win over Fiji, a warning Gnabry intends to heed.

"You can't underestimate anybody. Nobody is here just to make up the numbers and every team has qualified from their own continent," said Gnabry, who joined Arsenal's youth section from his hometown club Stuttgart in 2011. "They'll all be tough games, but we'll prepare as well as possible and learn from how they played against Fiji in their first game."

While Gnabry has made ten Premier League appearances for Arsenal and turned out in the UEFA Champions League, the 2016 Olympics mark his first major tournament in Germany colours. "Of course you notice that it really is something special to be here in Brazil. The spectators and the atmosphere in the stadium were fantastic. It's an honour for all of us to be here."

Indeed, if Gnabry continues to demonstrate his nose for goal on the big stage, then it is a fair bet that we will be seeing plenty more of him for Germany in the coming years.
