  • Mr Infantino met with Jaswar Umar to discuss Sri Lankan football development

  • The meeting took place in Doha, Qatar

Gianni Infantino has met with the President of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka and held constructive talks over a range of football development topics. The FIFA President met Jaswar Umar in Doha, Qatar, to receive updates on – among other projects – the progression of the game in Sri Lanka, including the recent completion of the inaugural Football Sri Lanka Super League.

The new competition – supported by FIFA Forward funds – featured ten teams and finished its first edition in February 2022 and has officially taken domestic football in Sri Lanka from amateur to semi-professional status. Also, on the agenda at the most recent meeting between Mr Infantino and Mr Umar was grassroots football, club football, and infrastructure in Sri Lanka. The meeting in Doha follows President Infantino’s visit to Sri Lanka in November 2021, where meetings were conducted with Mr Umar and other senior football administrators in Sri Lanka.
