Olympique Lyonnais won the 79th edition of the Blue Stars/FIFA Youth Cup after a 1-0 victory over Anderlecht in the final on Thursday.
The French side, who were making their debut at the tournament this year, claimed the title after Myziane Maolida scored Lyon’s winner on a sunny afternoon at the Zurich's Buchlern sports complex. The result sees the trophy leave Switzerland after Grasshoppers Zurich (2016) and FC Luzern (2015) won the last two editions of the annual youth football competition.
Coached by former club captain and Brazil defender Cris, Lyon finished top of Group A ahead of Grasshoppers Zurich (Switzerland), West Ham United (England), Independiente Santa Fe (Colombia), and FC Blue Stars (Switzerland).
Runners-up Anderlecht reached Thursday’s final after the Belgian side finished top of Group B ahead of FC Zurich (Switzerland), Benfica (Portugal), Mainz 05 (Germany), and FC St. Gallen (Switzerland).
In the match for third place, FC Zurich defeated city rivals Grasshoppers 1-0 through a goal from Arbenit Xhemajli.
