Located in the Yoosung neighbourhood of western Daejeon, the Daejeon World Cup Stadium holds up to 39,654 spectators. It hosted matches at the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™ a year after its construction in 2001 and famously witnessed striker Ahn Junghwan scoring the golden goal that eliminated Italy and sent Korea Republic into the quarter-finals. More recently, supporters of its resident club, Daejeon Citizen FC, have nicknamed it “The Purple Arena.”
