The Argentinian Football Association (AFA) has made an official bid to host the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023™ after FIFA withdrew Indonesia’s right to stage the tournament.

“There have been other countries that have expressed an interest, but in terms of a formal proposal and all the government assurances that come with that, Argentina is in pole position,” President Infantino said during a press conference on the eve of the CONMEBOL Congress in Asunción, Paraguay.

“The decision will be made, I think, over the next two or three days – and as soon as possible because the [U-20] World Cup kicks off on 20 May, which is right around the corner. We all know about football in Argentina, it’s a country that I’m sure would be able to host a tournament of this magnitude.”

Mr. Infantino stated AFA President Claudio Tapia, as well as the South American country’s Ministry of Sport and Tourism, and the Ministry of Commerce had provided the “necessary assurances” behind a “strong” bid, which was handed to him by CONMEBOL President Alejandro Domínguez.

“AFA’s proposal will be sent over to the FIFA Bureau [of the Council], which will ultimately make the decision as to who will host the U-20 World Cup,” explained the FIFA President. “I would like to give my thanks, of course, to President Tapia and to all of Argentina, as well as the [Argentinian] government, for organising their proposal in such a quick fashion. It really makes our life a little bit easier.”
