The use of Goal-line technology (GLT) in several competitions around the world has increased significantly since its approval by the International Football Association Board (The IFAB) in 2012.
Each year, the number of new GLT installations has almost doubled compared to the previous year. The technology is constantly supporting referees in the decision-making process and contributing to a fair game – an assessment five years into the use in football.
Goal-Line Technology made its debut in an official competition at the FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2012. Then, for the first time in FIFA World Cup history, Goal-Line Technology corroborated whether a shot had crossed the line as France's Karim Benzema forced an own-goal against Honduras at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™.
The use of Goal-line technology continues to increase, with 238 GLT unique installations implemented over the last 4 years and 166 GLT installations still active as of May 2018.

The decision of whether or not to implement GLT in a tournament is entirely up to the competition organizer.
GLT has been used in international competitions organised by FIFA (FIFA World Cup™, the FIFA Women’s World Cup™, the FIFA Confederations Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup), UEFA (Champions League, Europa League, Euro), CONCACAF & CONMEBOL (Copa America Centenario 2016). It has also been used at national competitions organized by The Premier League and The FA in England, the Bundesliga and DFB in Germany, LFP in France and Lega Serie A in Italy.
