FIFA’s new Living Football podcast returns for episode 3
Germany 1990 World Cup striker Karl-Heinz Riedle stars
FIFA President Gianni Infantino and New Zealand’s Kirsty Yallop also feature
The latest episode of FIFA’s new Living Football podcast is headlined by a chat between former Germany striker Karl-Heinz Riedle and host Reshmin Chowdhury.
We also hear from Germany’s most-capped player Lothar Matthaus, FIFA President Gianni Infantino and former long-serving New Zealand international Kirsty Yallop.
A FIFA World Cup™ winner in 1990, Riedle enjoyed a decorated club and international career. In the podcast, he talks through his Italy 1990 memories, and experiences of playing alongside Matthaus, who turned 60 this week.
“His determination in a game was just incredible,” Riedle said of his former national team skipper. “We only have one player, maybe Franz Beckenbauer, who is on the same level as him, but Lothar was just the man, maybe the best player ever in Germany.
“If you look at the five World Cups he played in, even the second one, I think I remember very well the game against Diego Maradona, when he had to mark him and he was very young at that age, and Maradona was the best player on the planet, so it was an incredible game from his side, maybe the best in his whole career.”
We also hear from Germany’s record male appearance holder himself to discuss an extraordinary career which spanned four decades and included a FIFA World Cup, a UEFA European Championship and a truly unique rivalry with Diego Maradona.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino talks about the International match calendar and the recent CAF Presidential elections – and we find out how the COVID-19 Relief Fund has helped football bounce back in Sierra Leone.
Plus former New Zealand international, Kirsty Yallop, joins us to discuss the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
