Five-star Spain seal return to Olympic stage

  • Spain become first side from Europe to qualify for next year's Tokyo Olympics

  • 5-0 win over Poland sealed spot in European U-21 Championship semi-finals

  • Three more teams from the continent will book their place in coming days

Spain became the first European nation to book a ticket to next year's Men's Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020 after sealing their place in the semi-finals of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship Italy 2019.

La Furia Roja beat Poland 5-0 with goals from five different scorers to ensure their place in the qualifying tournament's last four. Pablo Fornals, Mikel Oyarzabal and Fabian Ruiz made it 3-0 by half-time, while Dani Ceballos and Borja Mayoral put the result beyond doubt in the second half.

The result meant that Spain, hosts Italy and Poland were all level on six points in Group A at the fulltime whistle, as Italy defeated Belgium 3-1 in the group's other match, but La Roja progress due to a superior goal difference.

Italy are still within a chance of qualifying for the Men's Olympic Football Tournament as the best runner-up, depending on the results at the conclusion of Groups B and C.

Spain will return to the Men's Olympic Football Tournament for the first time since London 2012, having missed out on Rio 2016.

Head coach Luis de la Fuente's charges will look to repeat the heroics of the side that won gold at the 1992 Games on home soil.
